MISINTERPRETATION OF FEMINISM

Feminism, a largely discussed topic world wide and often it is misunderstood. Everyone has their own thoughts and opinions about it. Due to this we avoid what it actually stands for.

So let’s start with the basic definition.

Feminism is an ideology that claims men and women should have equal rights and opportunities in every field. It stands against the discrimination of an individual based on sex and gender.

Now the question arises WHY WE NEED FEMINISM?

Even in 2021 women are facing difficulties which prevailed decades ago and much more. From workspace to home society expects women to adjust. Sometimes it sounds like ‘women are meant to adjust.’ Women are often judged for the choices they make from clothing to marriage. Feminism is not against society but patriarchal society. Not only women, men are also victims of this patriarchy. Like women, men are also expected to be in a certain way such as to not express emotions, to not cry, to not do things which are considered as

‘Girlish.’ Feminism is here to abolish all these gender based discrimination created in minds of people. Anyone can be identified as feminist if they want to destruct inequality and discrimination.

How is feminism misinterpreted?

There are some common statements that helps to misinterpret as well as confuse people about feminism:

1. All feminists are man-haters.

It is the most common lie about feminism but the truth is that it stands for equality of all sexes and women empowerment. It has no intention of demeaning men and proving women’s supremacy.

2. Feminists are violent women.

Feminist are not angry violent women who ran away from mental asylum and now fighting for satiate their rage. They can be individuals with calm and serene behavior, scholars, degree holders, religious and atheist, man, woman, transexuals and people belonging to LGBTQ.

It can be anyone.

3. Feminists give the message of vulgarity.

Feminism does not convey the message to burn bras in protest or run naked in the roads. It states that no one should be judged according to their living or clothing choices.

4. Feminists are only career oriented women.

Feminist are not only career oriented women but all kinds of women from all kinds of places. In this patriarchal aura career oriented women are considered as ‘homebreakers’. But they all are doing their work without disrespecting each other. Eventually, it is all about spreading empowerment.

5. Feminists have hate-sex attitude.

Everything should be consensual and mutual between two people. Feminists are against rape and molestation which happen without consent no matter with which gender. We all are sexual beings and no one has the right to shame us for liking or not liking it.

There is a difference between Feminism and Pseudo feminism. The above bold statements are pseudo feminism. Do not get confused with it. Educate yourself precisely about it.
